Q. Where are you located?

Q. How do I sign up for online classes?

a. You can sign up on our website, by visiting Online Courses

Q. What are your office hours?

a. Manhattan location:

Q. I need help paying for tuition. Does NYREI offer financial aid?

a. NYREI is currently accepting Workforce 1 vouchers to cover the expense of tuition. Contact your local labor office for more information, or call (917) 493-7000. NYREI is also accepting the VA GI Bill. Students who qualify must first pay for tuition, and will be reimbursed by the U.S Government.

Q. Which classes does the Workforce 1 voucher cover?

a. We offer several different packages for the Workforce voucher. Visit www.nyc.gov/trainingguide for more information about our packages.

Q. What is the maximum amount I can receive from Workforce 1 for tuition?

a. The maximum amount Workforce 1 will cover is $2,500.00

Q. I am licensed in New York State, but I'd like to be licensed in another state as well. What should I do?

a. Call the department of state at (518) 474-4429.

Q. I use a MAC operating system. Can I take online courses?

a. Yes, but if you are taking a course from Hondros, you will need to download Firefox.


Salesperson Course:

Q. What is the difference between a salesperson and a broker?

a. The major differences between salespersons and brokers are license requirements and client interaction. Brokers are generally required to have more education and sales experience than real estate salespersons. A real estate salesperson is licensed by the state, but must work for a broker.

Q. How many hours do I need to be a salesperson?

a. In order to obtain your Sales License, you need 75 hours of sales class time.

Q. Do I need any previous sales experience? Are there any education requirements?

a. You do not need to have any previous sales experience to become a salesperson, nor are there any prior education requirements. No GED required.

Q. Is there any way I can be exempt from having to take these classes?

a. Unless you are a lawyer or attorney, all persons must complete 75 hours of sales time in order to obtain a license.

Q. I have a previous felony/misdemeanor. Can I still get a sales license?

a. You must contact the department of state at (518) 474-4429

Q. When can I start classes?

a. Anytime! Sales classes are offered seven days a week in our Manhattan office (3 class sessions Monday-Thursday, 2 class sessions Fridays & weekends). We also offer our Salesperson program online.

Q. Are there any supplies or books I'll need for this course?

a. You may need to take notes during the lessons, so bring a highlighter and a note pad. We also offer our students a textbook authored by one of our certified instructors for a fee of $40.00.

Q. I noticed NYREI has several locations. Can I attend classes in different locations?

a. Yes! If our other locations are more convenient, we allow our students to attend classes in any of our four locations as long as they complete the 75 hour requirement.

Q. How can I pay for classes or materials at NYREI?

a. We accept cash, money order, credit or debit card. We do not accept personal checks.

Q. Can I take courses online and in class to complete my 75 hours?

a. No, you cannot mix and match online and class sessions. Students must choose which way they'd like to complete their 75 hours prior to registering (either online or in-class sessions).

Q. Can I register for courses on the same day they are being offered?

a. Yes! Registration is always ongoing, and you can attend the same day. Please arrive 30 minutes prior to the class start (for a list of class schedules, click "schedules" on our index tab).

Q. Is there a certain time limit to complete the Sales Person course?

a. You have four (4) months from the time you attend your first course to complete the sales program.

Q. I need more time to complete the course. What do I do?

a. NYREI offers its students a monthly extension after four months. A $50.00 fee will be assessed.

Q. How long is each sales class?

a. Each class is approximately 2 ½ to 3 hours long.

Q. What does the Salesperson course include?

a. The Salesperson course includes 20 modules (classes) that will give you all the information you need to be a salesperson. NYREI offers its students three different package options to choose from. Prices are as follows:

"Basic Package" $395.00 - Includes 20 complete sessions, job placement assistance, and real estate industry seminars (given every Wednesday afternoon by New York City Sales Brokers).

"Premium Package" $445.00 - Includes 20 complete sessions, unlimited tutoring by our instructors, a New York Real Estate Sales review crammer (valued at $25.00), and $25.00 off your first continuing education course.

"Professional Package" $540.00 - Includes 20 complete sessions, and your first continuing education course FREE! We also give a 25% discount on all future 7.5 hour continuing education courses given at NYREI. A 10% discount is also applied to any courses such as broker, property management, appraisal and mortgage broker.

Q. Is the textbook included in the cost of tuition?

a. No it is not. Our textbook is offered to our students for $40.00.

Q. I'm really confused about the class content. Can I repeat a class if I need some extra information?

a. You are more than welcome to repeat any of the 20 classes. Please note you will only receive hourly class credit the first time you attend a class.

Q. Does NYREI offer tutoring if I don't understand any content?

a. Absolutely! Tutoring sessions are held by our certified NYREI instructors every Monday 9:00 am, and one evening and one weekend per month.

Q. Is there a fee for tutoring sessions?

a. Tutoring at NYREI is $45.00 and is approximately 3 hours long. For students who purchased our "Premium Package" or "Professional Package" tutoring is unlimited and free of cost.

Q. Do I have to attend all 20 modules? What if I miss a course?

a. In order to be eligible for our school exam as well as the state exam, you must complete 18 out of the 20 modules, totaling 67.5 hours of mandatory class time.

Q. Do I have to take the 20 modules in any particular order?

a. No, all our lessons are independent of one another. You don't need information from one lesson in order to move on to the next one. You can start classes in any order.

Q. I've completed the 75 hour sales class requirement. What's next?

a. You must take our school exam. Upon achieving a 65% passing grade or higher, you will receive a certificate of completion.

Q. Do I have to pre-register for the school exam?

a. No you do not. We offer the school exam every Monday at 1:00 pm, one weekend a month and one week night a month.

Q. What if I fail the school exam?

a. No worries, you can always schedule to re-take the exam with one of our counselors. You have three attempts to pass the exam. A $25.00 fee will be assessed after the third attempt.

Q. I passed my school exam, now what?

a. You will receive a certificate of completion. Save this certificate, as it proves you've completed all coursework. The State Department may or may not ask you to mail it in to them at some point. If you haven't done so already, you must obtain an eAccess account on the New York Department of State website. This account will allow you to register for your state exam.

Q. Can I take the state exam before NYREI's school exam?

a. Yes, you can take both the state and school exam in any order you like, but you must successfully pass both exams in order to apply for your license.

Q. Does NYREI administer the State Exam? How often is the State exam given?

a. NYREI does not administer the State Exam. You must go to your local Department of State to take the exam. Exams are held every Tuesday. The cost for the exam is $15.00.

Q. I've passed the state exam. What's next?

a. Congratulations! You now must find a broker to sponsor you. Once you've done so, you can formally apply for your Salesperson License. The cost to apply for your sales license is $50.00. Once you receive it, you can start working immediately.

Q. How do I find a broker to sponsor me?

a. We have brokers that come to NYREI 6 days a week to recruit students. They actively recruit between classes, so feel free to stay and listen to what they have to say. You're also welcome to find a broker independently.

Q. I did the 75 hour class work, but never applied for my license. How long are my passing test grades valid until?

a. Your passing school exam is good for eight (8) years and your passing state exam is good for two (2) years.

Q. Do I need a college degree to obtain my Salesperson license?

a. No, no degrees are necessary to obtain a salesperson license.

Q. Can I attend classes at NYREI while I am currently enrolled in college?

a. Yes, and you do not need to have a degree to obtain your license.


Brokers Course:

Q. How many hours is this course?

a. The Brokers License Course is 45 hours in total.

Q. I want to be a broker, but the Department of State claims I don't have enough sales class hours. What does this mean?

a. In July of 2008, the Department of State changed the sales course hourly requirement from 45 hours, to 75 hours. Those already licensed prior to July 2008, who are now going for their brokers license are responsible to take the new additional 30 hours from the sales person's class (sessions 13-20).

Q. How many points in sales do I need in order to be a broker?

a. To be a broker, you must accrue 3500 points in sales.

Q. Where can I find a list of point values for sales transactions made?

a. You can find an itemized list of point values for sales transactions on the Department of State website. Point values can be found on the 4th page of the broker's application.

Q. How do I know how many transactions I've made?

a. You must contact your broker for that information.

Q. I need to take the brokers exam on a date that is not offered on the calendar. Can I call and schedule a date?

a. Yes! You can call us at (212) 967-5435. Please be advised a $25.00 fee will be assessed.

Q. Can I have my brokers' classes count toward the necessary continuing education I'll need?

a. You can use a completed Brokers Course (which includes passing the school exam) as your continuing education; however, you will also have to take a fair housing course as mandated by the Department of State.

Q. I missed a Brokers class. How can I make it up?

a. You can make up the class next time it's being offered. Check our monthly Brokers calendar for class schedules.

Q. What if I fail the Brokers school exam?

a. You can always retake the Brokers exam the next time it is offered. You have three attempts to pass the exam. A $25.00 fee will be assessed after the third attempt.

Q. I passed my Brokers school exam, now what?

a. You will receive a certificate of completion. Save this certificate, as it proves you've completed all coursework. The State Department may or may not ask you to mail it in to them at some point. If you haven't done so already, you must obtain an eAccess account on the New York Department of State website. This account will allow you to register for your state exam.

Q. Can I take the state exam before NYREI's Brokers school exam?

a. Yes, you can take both the New York state and school Brokers exam in any order you like, but you must successfully pass both exams in order to apply for your brokers' license.

Q. Does NYREI administer the brokers' State Exam? How often is the State exam given?

a. NYREI does not administer the Brokers State Exam. You must go to your local Department of State to take the exam. Exams are held once a month. The cost for the exam is $15.00. You must register for the state exam through your eAccess account.

Q. I've passed the state exam. What's next?

a. Congratulations! You now must apply for your Brokers license. The cost to apply for your Brokers license is $150.00. Once you receive it, you can start working as a Broker immediately.


Continuing Education:

Q. I am a salesperson/broker and my license will expire soon. What do I do?

a. When a license is due for renewal, the licensee will be notified in two ways: a postcard reminder will be sent to the licensee's business address and an email reminder will be sent to the email address provided in the licensee's eAccessNY account. Q. What is continuing education? As a salesperson or a broker, do I have to take these classes?

a. The New York Department of State requires licensees (both salespersons and brokers) to successfully complete 22.5 hours of approved real estate continuing education within their two year license term.

Q. I have been a real estate licensee for many years. Am I exempt from the continuing education requirements?

a. Either of the below are exempt from the continuing education requirements:
  • Any licensed real estate broker who is engaged full time in the real estate business and who has been licensed prior to July 1, 2008 for at least 15 consecutive years immediately preceding renewal or
  • An attorney admitted to the New York State Bar who holds a real estate broker's license.

Q. How long are these classes?

a. Each continuing education class is credited for either 3.75 hours or 7.5 hours (to see a complete course offering list for continuing education, please click on http://www.nyrei.com/conedschdlebymonth.aspx).

Q. Are there any specific classes I am required to take?

a. Effective for renewals on or after July 1, 2008, the 22.5 hours must include at least three hours of instruction pertaining to fair housing. The remaining hours must consist of approved elective material.

Q. How often must I complete these classes?

a. Real estate professionals must complete 22.5 hours of continuing education every two years to keep their licenses active.

Q. Are there any other classes that can be counted as continuing education?

a. Yes! The following courses have been approved for continuing education:
  • 15-hour Title Closing Procedures for Real Estate Transactions
  • 16-hour LEED Green Associate course (Approved by the Dept. of State for 15 hours of continuing education credits)
  • 19.5-hour Commercial Real Estate Certificate course
  • 20-hour NY SAFE Mortgage Loan Originator Course
  • 22.5-hour Construction Management Certificate course
  • 22.5-hour Green Buildings and Practices Certificate course
  • 22.5-hour Property Management Certificate course
  • 22.5-hour Real Estate and Investments course
  • 30-hour Salesperson remedial course (must complete course & school exam in its entirety to get continuing education credit)
  • 45-hour Brokers course (must complete course & school exam in its entirety to get continuing education credit)

Q. Is there a deadline to complete continuing education?

a. You must complete all 22.5 hours of continuing education before your license expires.

Q. I've completed all 22.5 hours of continuing education. What's the next step?

a. As of February 1, 2010, licensees are no longer sent a paper renewal in the mail. In accordance with New York's Green Initiative, the Division of Licensing Services will be requiring that all real estate licensees renew their licenses online. To renew your license online you must have an active eAccessNY account and follow the directions below:
  • Go to the Department of State website, www.dos.state.ny.us, and select the eAccessNY link (to the right of the screen)
  • Select "access" link under item 3, "Access My Account" and log into your account
  • Select list of licenses/select the license number you wish to renew
  • Select the "Renew License" link and complete the online application

Q. What happens if I do not complete my continuing education and don't renew my license?

a. If you do not renew your license, you cannot conduct any real estate activities that require a New York State real estate license in accordance with Article 12-A of the Real Property Law. There are no grace periods that allow you to continue working while not licensed. You have two years from the date your license expires to renew your license. If you fail to renew within that period, you will be required to pass the state written examination. No continuing education will be required to repeat the licensing process again.

When you submit your new salesperson application, you must include the following: your new examination results, application fee, and a copy of your expired license/pocket card or ORIGINAL proof of completing the salesperson course. If possible, it is better to submit original proof of your salesperson course. If you do not have an original certificate, then call the school where you took the course to request another certificate. If you are applying for your broker's license, you must submit ORIGINAL proof of your 75-hour salesperson course and 45-hour broker course, or a copy of your expired broker's license.
